I’m running for Harbor Commissioner of the Oxnard Harbor District after working in the community these last several years, and realizing how important the Port is to the economic and environmental sustainability of this community. For my entire adult life, I’ve felt called to public service. I have bachelors degrees in Political Science and Philosophy, a masters in public administration, and work today as a policy analyst. The Oxnard area, and really Ventura County on the whole, is facing several crises at the same time. Affordability is driving out young families - the Port can solve this by surging high paying, union jobs through investments in infrastructure and expanding imports to and exports from the region. We can support the working class coming through the Port by expanding housing and lodging options around the region for the 18,000 commercial truckers that pass through every week. Our education outcomes are lower here than in neighboring cities, the Port already has a rubric for this at Oxnard College - let’s get into and partner with every organization and institution around Oxnard and Port Hueneme to develop logistics pathways so we can get kids as early as possible onto the right path towards improved outcomes. The harbor district was created to protect the coast and its marine life, but with our changing climate, it’s time to open a permanent center for climate resilience. We are at ground zero for climate change, let’s build it here.
The Port of Hueneme is the ideal location for further development of economic opportunity for Ventura County residents. Investing in expanded training and apprenticeship programs and seeking ways to lower the costs of doing business for Port clients offers locals the opportunity to advance in their careers while strengthening the financial stability of the Port.
The Oxnard Harbor District has the obligation to ensure fiscal responsibility of funds, including in obtaining oversight and compliance from area public, non profit, and private organizations that are recipients of funds from Port programming.
Strengthening Port relationships with the City of Oxnard, City of Port Hueneme, and County of Ventura to act as partners in the modernization of the region's infrasture is a primary strategy to create jobs and support the working class, including our vital trucking and freight community.
Through the implementation of evidence-based strategies in attacking climate change, the Port is primed for being a county's center for strategic climate resilience, including by leading the way through emissions reductions in Port activities.
Modern times and new age threats call for enhanced cybersecurity that hardens the Port's infrastructure against any threats that may come its way. This includes a robust ransomware and cyberattack implementation plan that protects Port clients from disruptions in economic activity.
Expanding programming for STEM and logistics jobs creation for the greater Oxnard area's youth will be key to the Port's role in securing a better future for all of Ventura County.
Have questions or suggestions? I would love to hear from you!
